How it works
A buccal swab is a simple, non-invasive method to collect DNA from the inside of a person's cheek, commonly used for genetic testing, paternity testing, and medical diagnostics. The process involves gently rubbing a soft, sterile swab against the inner cheek to collect epithelial cells that contain DNA.
After the swab collects enough cells, it is placed in a sterile container and sent to a laboratory. In the lab, DNA is extracted from the cells, then amplified to increase its quantity for easier analysis. The DNA is then examined based on the test's purpose—whether it's identifying allergies, determining paternity, or other analyses.
Buccal swabbing is popular because it is painless, quick, and can be done at home without medical assistance. This method's simplicity and effectiveness make it a widely used choice for DNA collection.
